Our body is pretty cleaver – it has a number of inbuilt mechanisms and back up options that allow us to maintain homoeostasis – this is the baseline or set point that our body tries to maintain when we are pushing ourselves too far. One of the main ways our body restores and maintains this balance is through our adrenal glands. These little glands are about the size of a walnut and sit just on top of our kidneys.
Our adrenal glands have a few key jobs, one of which is to produce hormones and messaging molecules that keeps other parts of our body in balance when we are going through a period of stress. Our body doesn’t discriminate between ‘stressors’. It could be that you have been working to a crazy deadline at work, a period of sickness or illness (pregnancy and child birth can go in here too), experiencing a really bad break up or it could just be that you are exercising too hard, too often without enough rest in between. Our adrenal glands can only handle this amount of pressure for a short period of time before they start to get tired and stop working as efficiently as they should.
Here is what happens on the road to adrenal fatigue:
The end result? Fatigue, both mental and physical that leaves you feeling like you are dragging yourself through the day, barely surviving rather than really enjoying life with vibrancy and passion.
Adrenal Fatigue: How a naturopath can help
In her experience as a naturopath, Rebecca has found that addressing adrenal fatigue is best done using a multi-pronged, holistic approach. Adrenal fatigue can be a tricky thing to treat due to the number of different drivers that can influence its development (many people come to Rebecca having tried everything or having spent hours on Dr. Google with limited success). Rebecca will work with you on your nutrition to discuss a dietary approach to nourish your body specifically for adrenal fatigue and as well as prescribe scientifically validated and researched herbal medicine and nutrients to improve energy and adrenal function. Rebecca will also go over the best naturopathic solutions to regain balance in your lifestyle and to support and nourish your adrenal glands. In some instances, more in-depth testing is required, however if this is something that you need, Rebecca will discuss this with you in your consultation.
